How to Get Straight Teeth Without Braces

Are braces the only way to get straight teeth?

Think back to when you were in school.

You probably knew at least one person who had braces. Even if your teeth weren’t as straight as they could be, you probably secretly hoped that you wouldn’t need braces yourself because you heard the horror stories of the things that come along with them: the bullying, not being able to eat your favourite foods, and the story you heard from the older kids about how getting them tightened was torture.

Now as an adult, you might wish you’d done something about your crooked teeth, but the idea of brightly coloured elastics and braces in your mouth isn’t your idea of aesthetically pleasing. But do you really have a choice?

The answer is yes! Thanks to advances in dentistry, you can get the smile you’ve been searching for without having to rely on braces.

Clear aligners are the alternative to braces you didn’t know you needed.

A clear set of plastic aligners are a more discreet way to give you the straight teeth you’ve been dreaming of.

Your dentist will make impressions and take photos of your teeth to send to the company that makes the aligners. Once they arrive, a computer will determine how many “aligners” or appliances will be required to make the necessary tooth movements. Your dentist will review the estimate the computer makes and add any needed changes before your aligners are created. Once you receive them you’ll wear them for 1-2 weeks before swapping for the next set.

During the whole process, you should visit your dentist every few weeks to receive and verify the fit of the next set. Sometimes small changes are made to the shape of your teeth to slightly narrow them or add small amounts of filling material to improve the effectiveness of the aligner.

Do I have to wear my aligner all the time?

The only times you should take your aligner out are when you’re eating and brushing your teeth. You should take extra care to keep your teeth clean, especially after eating and before putting your aligner back in your mouth.

While you can take them out if you have a big event, you also take the risk of getting into the habit of taking your aligner out for several hours and forgetting to put them back in. Once you start doing this, the efficacy goes down and/or your treatment will be delayed, which will result in you being disappointed with the results. They only work when you put in the effort.

Will clear aligners give me the same results as braces?

Many of the tooth movements made by braces can be made with aligners, but certain movements are easier than others.

When it comes to limited tooth movements, clear aligners are the winner because they take roughly one year or less. If this is the type of treatment you’re looking for, your dentist may be able to help you. In challenging situations, you should consider consulting a trained orthodontist. In our office, if we think a treatment would take a lot longer than one year, we will refer you to an orthodontist for either clear aligner treatment or braces.
