Your dental insurance benefits are like a coupon for dentistry!
You may have noticed that sometimes your dental insurer reimburses you at a lower rate than the dentist’s actual fee. Frequently, insurance companies state that the reimbursement was reduced because your dentist’s fee has exceeded the usual, customary or reasonable fee (or fee guide) used by the company.

A statement as this gives the impression that any fee greater that the amount paid by the insurance company is unreasonable, or above what most dentists in the area charge for a specific service.

Each insurance company uses a different set of fees they consider allowable. Frequently, this data can be three to five years old and these “allowable” fees are set by the insurance company so they can make a net profit of 20%-30%.

Unfortunately, insurance companies imply that your dentist is “overcharging” rather than say they are underpaying or that benefits are too low. In general the less expensive the policy, the lower the fees for reimbursement.

Dental insurance is intended to cover some, but not all of the cost of your dental care. Most plans include co-insurance provisions, a deductible, and certain other expenses that must be paid by the patient at the time of services. Reimbursement amounts are not, and never have been, a guideline for quality care.
